SCHEME OF WORK
Introduction
This lecture discusses the concepts of scheme of work and lesson plan as used in education in general and in science and mathematics in particular. Also, the lecture discusses the systematics steps for writing an effective scheme of work and a lesson plan for teaching and learning of science and mathematics in secondary schools.
Scheme of Work
Literally, scheme of work is “a plan for work”. It is an overview or a long term plan for what the teacher aims to teach in a particular subject across a term or an academic year.
A teacher will need to write a scheme of work each subject they will teach in a term. The scheme of works is written at the beginning of a term.
Benefits of scheme of work
i. Ensures no any crucial content is left un taught
ii. Provided an overview of all lessons to be covered in a term
iii. Make teachers not to struggle in figuring the next lesson
iv. Suggests the T/L strategies, activities, materials references and assessmen
A well prepared scheme of work should, among other things;
i. Gives an overview of the content to be covered in a term
ii. Provide for a sequential listing of topic and its sub-topics and activities
iii. Show a relationship between content, T/L strategies, T/L materials, assessment and number of periods
Preparation of scheme of work
The following are some important considerations to be born in mind when preparing a scheme of work;
i. Understanding the syllabus; it is important that the teacher is conversant with the syllabus thoroughly so that can interpret and implement correctly and successfully.
ii. Preceding and succeeding the syllabus content; where necessary, the teacher should be able to rearrange the content in logical teaching order considering the proceeding and succeeding syllabus content
iii. Adapting scheme of work of the same subject from previous year or from another teacher; the teacher can revise and update accordingly the existing scheme of work to suit current learners needs
iv. Time estimation;the teacher should establish the actual amount of time available for T/L in a week, month, term or a year by consulting school calendar or school time table. Moreover, the scheme should indicate school breaks, public holidays, examinations, sports week e.t.c.
