Newala District Council is one of the
oldest colonial Councils established in 1945 by the British government under
the Local Government Act of 1953 number 333. After independence, the Tanzanian
Government adopted colonial districts including Newala. As was the case with
other local authorities in the country, the Newala district council between
1961-1972 could not implement the expected standards due to the lack of skilled
workers, small funds and lack or limited management skills. The District
Councils were abolished in 1972 and replaced by 'Regional Authorities' for a
period of ten years between 1972 - 1982. The Newala District Council was
reinstated in 1982 under Act of Parliament number 7 of 1982.
